Ron Artest, bad role model?

Ron Artest, a well known NBA player has recently come out and spoke of his off the court behavior which he participated in throughout his years as an NBA player. Artest confessed to reporters that he use to drink heavily at halftime at almost every game and seemed to talk about all this with a big smile on his face. He also mentioned the usage of drugs and referred to himself as a self proclaimed pimp while facing the uphill battle of fatherhood. Not only is this a disgrace to the NBA and all their athletes, but it’s pathetic to see somebody almost excited about confessing these ridiculous activities both on and off the court. Artest has had many problems throughout his career including the brawl in Detroit when he went into the stands and hit a paying customer. Obviously this guy isn’t a role model in any sense, but I am interested in seeing if the NBA does fine Artest for coming out and once again giving the NBA a bad name. There is no doubt that Ron Artest is a great competitor but it isn’t far fetched to say that this guy has mental problems. This guy is the Adam Pac-man Jones of the NBA and I wouldn’t mind seeing this guy get kicked out of the league for all the negative publicity he has brought to the NBA. The NBA is struggling as is to fill seats and get better ratings and this is once again putting them in the wrong direction. The worst part of this is that kids are going to read this and think it’s alright to drink every day of the week and refer to women the way he does when he refers himself as a pimp. Athletes need to know they are role models to kids and with the money they get paid for playing a game, the least they can do is be an adult. So with all that said, do you agree with my statements or do you think I’m being to harsh?

  1. I absolutely do not think you are being too harsh. Your points are very valid and are going to be true. All over the world children are looking up to athletes, whether it be basketball, football, or soccer. When athletes either the best or just metioker athletes make comments that could influence children it is very wrong. I had no idea about this player but I hope that the NBA does fine him for his actions especially if he was laughing and smiling when making this confessions that means this player was pretty sick, who would ever drink to be drunk in the middle of halftime what was his coach doing?

  2. Honestly, I have never heard of this person before haha. I think you have a great point in that the NBA should be doing something and why arent they? Why are certain things being noticed so heavily, like Serena Williams outburst, but not this Ron guy. Is it because he is saying it towards himself and not putting it towards anyone else? Either way, as you mentioned, there are people who look up the celebs and the game, so lets be civil here.

  3. I 100% agree with you. What I find interesting is that when he went to LA, he immediately started going around to random Laker fans and gave them tickets, food, gifts, etc. This is way of saying - ya I started team brawls, drink liquor at half time, and pimp women, but it's OK because I gave some fans tickets. He should absolutely be fined for putting the integrity of the league at jeopardy. Honestly, think about it, why would he come out and say that he used to drink liquor at half time? It's in the past, and it's a disgrace, why tell people this? Unless, he actually thinks it's cool, that people will find this humorous. I don't know. This is the same guy that showed up on a late night talk show recently in just his boxers. It's truly sad because he is such a great talent, but he's still a child who, before he makes a decision thinks only, how will this benefit me?
